Chapter seven
Rachel got up as she saw Abi walk towards the table.
âWell, look at you, the glamorous globetrotter.â Rachel laughed as she kissed Abi on both cheeks.
They were meeting for lunch in a café in Farringdon Road. Rachel had messaged after hearing about Abiâs return to London for a new job and suggested they get together. She herself worked close by for a large FMCG company at its headquarters overlooking the river. In the eighteen months since sheâd started, Rachel had been promoted twice and enjoyed precocious seniority with a salary to match.
Abi looked her up and down. âStopped shopping at Primark, then?â
Rachelâs clothes, casual business dress that on her, looked effortlessly sophisticated - and expensive in a âjust thrown onâ kind of way. Her hair was cut short and choppy, falling over one eye and Abi could see how attractive and impressive she would be in her corporate world.
âAbigail, at some point, one needs to forget the cheap, fake Ramones tee shirt. If you are going to negotiate a generous wardrobe budget, have South Molton Street in mind.â
"I had the Oxfam shop in mind for my negotiation.â
âDonât get all downtrodden-chic-warrior on me, Ab.â Rachel glanced sideways at Abiâs jeans, rolled up at the ankles, red canvas plimsolls and faded black tee shirt. âBesides, Iâm not doing fashion-guilt. Iâve earned my perks.â
Abigail laughed. âActually, you look bloody brilliant.â
âThank you kindly, Abigail Finch. So do you. America has given you even more freckles and a fetching page-boy cut.â She dropped her voice to a whisper. âCareful Ab, you might get picked up by a proper lesbian looking like that.â
Abi regarded her evenly, her reply sardonic. âIn case it escaped your notice, Rach, I am a proper lesbian, so let me think... shouldnât I be encouraging getting picked up by another proper lesbian?â
After thirteen years of closeness, with a spectrum of descriptions to portray their changing and multi-purpose relationship, they dropped easily into conversation that was both unguarded and personal to the point of what outsiders might deem hurtful at times. They simply had never held back. Sometimes, though, it seemed to Abi that Rachel was doing most of the not holding back these days.
âYeah, yeah, I know. But you know Iâm the only one that will tell you whatâs what.â
âAnd âwhatâs whatâ is that I look like a boy?â
âUm, a bit, but a pretty one.â She studied her carefully, like she was holding up a dress pulled from the wardrobe that sheâd not worn for a time and now appreciated all over again. âYou know, you are very fanciable... in a Rooney Mara kind of way.â
âHmm. Howâs Greg?â She pointedly brought Rachelâs boyfriend into the conversation.
âYeah, heâs great.â She narrowed her eyes, picking up on Abiâs diversion. âIâm allowed to say youâre fit Abi. Iâm not coming on to you.â
Yeah, donât, thought Abi.
âSo, was there a nice girl in Charlotte?â
âNah, just work and meeting some long-lost family.â
âOh yes, you stayed with your aunt and uncle, didnât you?â
Abigail smiled. âYes⦠Iâm lucky. Theyâre totally brilliant.
